AGS Celebrates Black History Month

In celebration of Black History Month, Melanin Matters facilitated an assembly to share about the importance of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). HBCUs were created for the purpose of helping others by focusing on the values of service and justice. These institutions serve as social forces for good while promoting equal access to higher education for all people. For this reason, these institutions have been pivotal in awarding 60% of all engineering degrees and 40% of all STEM degrees earned by African Americans. Additionally, half of the country’s Black teachers and 40% of all Black health professionals graduate from an HBCU.

Prominent figures who attended HBCU’s:

  • Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, Florida A & M
  • Toni Morrison, Howard University

  • Langston Hughes, Lincoln University
  • Kamala Harris, Howard University
  • Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Morehouse College
  • Oprah Winfrey, Tennessee State University
