Kimbrell Smith Begins Tenure as Interim Head of School

Atlanta Girls’ School has welcomed Kimbrell Smith as Interim Head of School for the 2021-22 and 2022-23 school years. Kimbrell has served Atlanta’s independent school community in a variety of capacities for nearly 20 years and brings both a wide range of professional experience and deep respect for AGS.

“The first time I visited AGS over a decade ago, I was so impressed with what I saw: students who had a strong sense of self, who were unafraid to use their voices, and who lived with purpose in a way I couldn’t have imagined at their age. When the opportunities came to serve as a trustee and then as Interim Head of School, that unique culture which is the very heart of AGS motivated me to step forward,” Kimbrell says.

A native Atlantan, Kimbrell is a graduate of The University of Georgia with a BS in Political Science and earned a Master of Divinity with a focus in pastoral counseling at Candler School of Theology at Emory University. Her previous school-based roles include classroom teacher, chaplain, college counselor, and lower school counselor in charge of outplacement. For nine years, she owned and operated Teegarden Education Group, partnering with families and schools to know, honor, and encourage students along their unique educational journeys.

“Kimbrell is a lifelong educator who has been a champion of girls and AGS for many years,” says Board of Trustees Chair Chris Marquardt. “She is committed to excellence and academic rigor in a truly inclusive environment. No one knows the independent school landscape in this city better than Kimbrell. Our board has full confidence in her ability to lead AGS to new heights. During her time on the board, Kimbrell led our Strategic Planning Committee, focusing on the long-term growth and direction of AGS. Now, in the Head of School role, she and her fabulous team of teachers and administrators will drive AGS forward in its work as a leadership engine for 21st century women and in its mission of inspiring girls to lead lives of purpose.”

Kimbrell looks forward to meeting and working with more members of the Hurricane family!
